Todos Santos Island
On our last posts we talked about the wide variety of entertainment options offered between Ensenada and the rest of Baja California Norte. We posted about the famous wine route, the ecotourism at the Juarez and San Pedro Martir Sierras, the singular gastronomy in the state and about different events that were held in Ensenada, but now we are going to talk about a place that is worldwide known by a specific community and designated as a protected area by the Mexican government. It has special characteristics like its fauna and the power of the sea in its coasts; we are talking about the Todos Santos Island. Actually this name is given to two islands located 12 miles away from Ensenada port, and they are recognized by their powerful and big waves of 30 foot high or more.
The Todos Santos Island, in the last two years, had been host of one of the stages of the “Big Wave World Tour” annual competition in which surfers from around the world look for the title “Big Wave World Champion” given to the surfer with the maximum points granted by the big and risky waves. On this year (2011) the event was called “Peligroso at Todos Santos” and took place in the north side where the biggest waves are seen, this part is also called “Killer’s”.
On the other hand, the island is home of a wide variety of sea creatures like starfishes, urchins, spider crabs, parrot fishes, and so on. You can enjoy a boat tour around the island but you cannot go ashore because, as we mention at the beginning, it is a protected area. Definitely the Todos Santos Island is one of the places that make Baja California special.
